An
unexpected surprise led Brandon Delgado to join the Marine Corps four years
ago: the birth of his now 4-year-old son.
“I
needed to make a move to help provide for my family,” said Delgado. “I wanted
to better myself for my wife and son.”
It’s
this line of thought that drove Delgado to seek a Bachelor of Business
Administration while still in the Corps.
Concerned
by the rising cost of books and tuition, Delgado began looking for help. A Google
search introduced him to the VFW “Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship.” After
submitting an application, Delgado was thrilled to receive a scholarship of more
than $2,000.
The
assistance allowed him to take 12 credit hours this semester, as opposed to the
six hours he could safely afford. Now he can graduate sooner and begin a
graduate program.
“My
family and I would like to thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts,”
said Delgado. “It’s because of you that I’m able to further my education while
I’m still in the military.”
When
Delgado graduates, he hopes to work as a manager at an Apple store, and feels
his time as a Marine, and in combat in Afghanistan, has prepared him well.
“The
Marines have taught me selflessness, dedication, professionalism and courage,”
said Delgado. “It gave me the discipline and initiative to never stop improving
myself.”
To other
service members out there who are looking to the future, Delgado doesn’t mince
words …
“What are you waiting for?” said Delgado. “With all
the benefits out there and wonderful groups like the VFW on your side, there’s
no reason anyone should pass up an opportunity to continue their education
while in the military.”
