NEW FATHER CALLS HOME DURING BIRTH THANKS TO OPERATION UPLINK

When Sgt. James Benecke couldn't be there during his son's birth, VFW free call time delivered the next best thing.

Like any new father, Sgt. James Benecke, 27, wants nothing more than to hold his firstborn son.

Before Benecke can return to Fort Bragg, N.C., to meet Baby Alexander, he must complete his tour in Iraq, where he maintains chemical defense equipment.

“It was hard being away from my wife Danelle during the pregnancy,” said Benecke. “She needed me to be there in some way.”

With the help of Operation Uplink, Benecke was able to call home on the day of Alexander’s birth.

“I was actually on the phone with Danelle’s mother, who was in the delivery room during the birth,” said Benecke. “I wish I would have been there, but I got the next best thing.”

Benecke looks forward to returning home to his new family.

“I really can’t wait until my son is old enough for me to teach him things,” said Benecke.

Upon returning to Fort Bragg, Benecke hopes to become part of another family when he joins the VFW.

“I will stand behind any organization that helps boost morale for our troops,” Benecke concluded.
